“I’ve seen a lot of BTS videos in my day, but this blows them all away. It actually feels like you’re right there on set with Ryan and his team, like you’re part of the decision making process. Cool stuff.”

What's Covered In On Set With Ryan Booth
Earlier this year, our full video crew at Story & Heart followed professional cinematographer Ryan Booth as he directed his first narrative film.

Now here’s the cool part.

We captured every piece of the process, from script to production to post, and distilled it all into over four hours of polished behind-the-scenes goodness.

It’s far and away the most in-depth material you’ll ever see on the topic of filmmakers doing their work. You’ll watch as Ryan and his team come up with the idea, write the script, go on a tech scout, do a table read, prep the gear, shoot the film, then cut, color, and sound design it.

Like we said, it’s quite comprehensive, and we’re confident you’ll learn a ton about the filmmaking process just from sitting and watching it :)

Below you'll find a breakdown of the 4+ hours of behind the scenes content from On Set With Ryan Booth.

EP1: The Working Cut
Get a backstage pass to watch The Heights before it was fully locked, allowing you see the impactful final tweaks, such as the final score and color grade.
EP2: Write What You Know
Now that you have your story, it's time to lock down logistics so you can bring those scenes to a screen. Gina, the producer from The Delivery Men, shares her perspective on what it takes to get the job done.
EP3: A Draft is Brought to Life
Before production can start, it’s up to the writers to draft a fictional world that will guide the entire production. Join Ryan as he explores the intricacies and challenges of bringing the actors and scenes to life on paper in a way that would translate successfully as real life on film.
EP4: Meeting in the City of Angels
Join Ryan and his team at the table two weeks prior to production. You’ll get an insider look as they hammer out logistics, organization, extras, script adjustments, insurance, and all of the details that are hidden behind the scenes before the camera starts to roll.
EP5: The First Tech Scout
At some point in pre-production you’ve got to go on location and let that experience inform your decisions—moving your questions from hypothetical to real. Join Ryan as he goes on a tech scout at the Troubadour and refines his vision for The Heights.
EP6: Final Production Meeting
Join Ryan and his entire primary crew as they hold a final roundtable production meeting. This is their chance to voice concerns and raise any questions before cameras roll in just 3 days.
EP7: Final Tech Scout of the Troubadour
Join Ryan and his crew on their last tech scout of the Troubadour. From the set design, to blocking, to lighting, join them as they finalize details to bring the story of The Heights to life.

EP9: Final Prep: Cameras, Lenses, & More
With only two days to shoot the entire film, Ryan and his team can't miss a beat. Follow along as they dig into gear and blocking the day before cameras roll.
EP10: Table Read with Talent

EP11: Production Day 1—Scene 2
Having great actors and a finely honed crew help Ryan’s first day of production get started in an amazing way...with the intimidating Sound Check scene.
EP12: Production Day 1—Scene 2 (cont'd)

Join Ryan as he navigates this partnership, and explains the mindset he and Chris needed to have to successfully work together.
EP13: Production Day 1—Scene 3
In stark contrast to Scene 2, we join Ryan as he tackles a relatively stripped-down Scene 3. Focusing on the history that the characters bring to the story, discover how cinematography and camera movement are made to shine in conveying the tense atmosphere of Scene 3.
EP14: Production Day 1—Scene 5
After the first two scenes of Day 1, Ryan is behind on his timelines and pushing through to the third scene of the day—Scene 5. Join along as this easy scene turns into something unexpected.
EP15: Production Day 1—Scenes 6 & 7
Follow along as Ryan shoots scenes 6 & 7, ends the day on schedule, and discovers the amazing work his team has put into staging the Green Room Scenes.
EP16: Production Day 2—Scene 4
Ryan and his crew are back up without much rest for Day 2 of production. First up—Scene 2 which has a high risk of tragically disrupting the shoot schedule if Ryan lets any of the many details run off track.
EP17: Production Day 2—Scene 4 (cont'd)
Ryan discusses his approach for directing each characters' performance in the ever-important
VIP room scene.
EP18: Production Day 2—Scene 10
The magic of film is taking a produced event, and bringing everything together in a way that feels natural to the subject. Join Ryan as he tackles Scene 10, and the strategies they used to turn the lighting, the extras, and the takes into an authentic music experience.
EP19: Production Day 2—Scene 10 (cont'd)
If the emotional truth rings true in your narrative, your work as a director and filmmaker has paid off. Join Ryan as he races against the clock towards the last 4 words of the day in a hunt for those authentic moments. That is a wrap.
EP20: Reflections on Post Production
You might remember the closing lines from Ryan in the previous lesson: There’s the movie you wrote, the movie you shot, and the movie on your hard drive. It’s finally time to head to post.
